St. Petri Lutheran Church - Nuriootpa
The first service of the St Petri congregation was held at Christmas in 1849 under a large gum tree.
With the assistance of a neighbouring pastor regular services were held in a wheat barn in Nuriootpa.
The families were anxious to build their own church so they soon began quarrying and carting stone, delivering sand and timber to the building site and in 1867 all their hard work paid off as their church was finally finished and dedicated.
In 1877 a German pipe organ was purchased, followed by the construction and installation of a bell and bell tower in 1927.
With the growing congregation it was decided that a completely new church on the same site would be built whilst still keeping the old bell tower.
This new, modern looking church was dedicated on the 5th of May, 1968.
It was built for approximately 700 people to be seated.
A Laurie's Pipe Organ was brought from Melbourne with 654 speaking pipes that are controlled by 27 stops.
In the tower are the foundation stones from the original church and parts of the original stained glass windows set into the new windows.
