Greenock
Greenock, which is located to the west of Nuriootpa was settled in about 1846 when the Creek Copper Mining operations began there.
It was named Greenock by James Smith, secretary to George Fife Angas, after the town at the mouth of the River Clyde in Scotland and settled largely by English people.
Since its naming it is sometimes referred to as the 'little scotland of the Barossa Valley' even though its history and settlers where not of Scottish descent.
Acting upon authority from the Bevan family, Forster organised the subdivision of a portion of land, purchased on the edge of Greenock creek into town allotments in 1850.
Again, the initial settlement of the township followed very closely to the pattern of settlement of Villages like Bethanian and Langmeil.
The first portion of land resold by the Bevan family in Greenock was to a Mr James of Gawler in September.
This parcel of lane was subsequently developed as the site of the Greenock arms hotel, which still stands today.
